What is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder?

At People First Education, we examine the Autistic impairments and base our training around them.  In general terms, Autism is made up of the following three impairments:

resources

Difficulties in relating to, or understanding other people and social situations.

resources

Difficulties in acquiring any form of communication

resources

A lack of imaginative ability, often substituted by obsessive, repetitive behaviour and a strong resistance to change.

(The Scottish Society for Autism: 2005)

In addition to these three impairments, there is an underpinning of sensory differences - over or undersensitive to stimuli. (Bogdashina: 2003)

On a People First Education Autism training course participants are empowered to refer the Autistic impairments of the children in their care and build their strategies around them.
